Virginia’s Seizure Safe Legislation
Effective July 01, 2022 are legislation for Seizure Safe Schools and Seizure Aware Workplaces.
As of 2020, March 26 is recognized as Epilepsy Heroes Day.
SEIZURE SAFE SCHOOLS
Seizure Safe Schools legislation, also known as the Jamie and Brie Strong Act took effect starting July 1, 2022. In Virginia, it includes seizure training requirements for school personnel, seizure action plans for students at schools, and a Good Samaritan clause when providing seizure first aid.
VIRGINIA EPILEPSY HEROES DAY
March 26th, 2023 is recognized as Epilepsy Heroes Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia (est. 2020).
SEIZURE AWARE WORKPLACES
Seizure Aware Workplaces legislation took effect starting July 1, 2022. The Department of Labor and Industry requires all employers of 25 or more employees to physically post seizure first aid information in a prominent location of the workplace and includes a Good Samaritan clause when providing seizure first aid.
SUDEP TRAINING
EFVA presents Seizure Safe VA Training program for introduced SUDEP legislation.
Bill 689 SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy)
Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy; protocol; information; training. Requires the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to take certain actions upon the finding that an individual died from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), defined in the bill. The bill directs the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to publish information on SUDEP and a SUDEP death investigation form on its website. Additionally, the bill requires the Chief Medical Examiner and local medical examiners to complete training in the investigation of SUDEP on a triennial basis. The bill has a delayed effective date of January 1, 2025.
